A Galway city man has been remanded in custody charged with the murder of his girlfriend last weekend.
Patrick Hogan (25), Fr Griffin Avenue, Galway, is charged with the murder of Karen Guinee (23) at their apartment at Fr Griffin Avenue, between 9pm on Saturday, June 10th, and 6.48am on Monday, June 12th.
Ms Guinee, a medical graduate from Cork, would have been 24 years old next Sunday.
Det Sgt Willie Byrne told a special sitting of Galway District Court yesterday morning that when Mr Hogan was charged with Ms Guinee's murder at 10pm the previous night, he replied: "I'm sorry."
Insp Tony O'Donnell applied to the court to have Mr Hogan remanded in custody to next Friday's remand court at Harristown, Castlerea, Co Roscommon.
Barrister John Kiely, defending, said he would be making an application for bail to the High Court next Monday.
Judge Mary Fahy remanded Mr Hogan in custody to appear before Harristown remand court on Friday morning.
