Householders in Galway city will face an increase of 40 per cent in domestic refuse charges next year if corporation estimate proposals are passed by councillors.

The £50 increase will bring the cost of refuse charges to £170 per household in 2001.

City businesses will also be hit by a rise of 8 per cent in commercial rates. Acting city manager Ms Martina Maloney explained that the costs of operating the refuse service had significantly increased.
