Gardaí last night issued a fresh appeal for information from members of the public in relation to the death of a man in Lucan last Sunday morning.

Derek O'Toole (24) died after he was hit by a car containing four off-duty gardaí in Lucan. The driver was in the vehicle with his garda girlfriend and a married couple who are also in the force.

Garda sources said on Monday that early indications were that Mr O'Toole was lying in the road when the car driven by the garda struck him and killed him. The driver of the car was "considerably under" the legal limit when tested for alcohol, Garda sources said.

Mr O'Toole had been socialising in the Clondalkin and Ronanstown area on Saturday night. He was taken to Connolly hospital, where he later died.
