Detectives investigating the murder of Monaghan man Jason McGovern have made another arrest.
A 21-year-old man was detained in the Omagh area of Co Tyrone this morning. A spokesman for the PSNI said the suspect was assisting police with their inquiries.
Mr McGovern, a 19-year-old student, died on New Year’s Eve, hours after he was attacked twice on a night out in Omagh.
Three teenagers aged 19, 18 and 17 were still in police custody in connection with the death. A 21-year-old man was released yesterday on police bail pending further inquiries.
Mr McGovern had been involved in a verbal exchange with a group of up to five men outside a bar at John Street. He was then followed by at least three of the gang to a car park at the Weigh Inn nightclub where he was punched and fell to the ground.
He managed to make his way back to a friend’s house at Emyvale, Co Monaghan, where he stayed the night. However, his lifeless body was found just before midday on Monday.
Postmortem results revealed Mr McGovern died from head injuries.
Meanwhile, detectives have made a specific appeal to speak to the driver and occupants of a dark-coloured Renault Megane car, which was parked outside the Terrace Bar in John Street at the time of the initial assault on Mr McGovern. Police believe they may have witnessed the attack.
