World number ones Roger Federer and Lindsay Davenport have been named top seeds for the Australian Open, which starts on Monday.

Swiss Federer, who collected 11 titles including two grand slams last year, is seeded ahead of number two American Andy Roddick.

Australian Lleyton Hewitt, who beat Roddick in the semi-finals of the tournament last year before losing to Marat Safin in the final, is third.

Safin has withdrawn from the tournament because of a knee injury while Spanish sensation Rafael Nadal and American veteran Andre Agassi are also missing through injury.

David Nalbandian is seeded fourth after ending last season on a high with victory over Federer in the Tennis Masters Cup final. Russia's Nikolay Davydenko is fifth seed.

In the women's draw, Davenport is top seed for the second successive year after claiming six titles in 2005. The American won this tournament in 2000 but lost in last year's final to Serena Williams.

Belgium's Kim Clijsters has been named as the second seed despite battling a hip injury which could yet force her to withdraw. France's Amelie Mauresmo is seeded third, ahead of Russia's Maria Sharapova and Mary Pierce of France.
