The doubling of the PAYE allowance to £2,000 in the Budget was described by the two main farm organisations as discrimination against farmers and the self-employed.

"This increased discrimination could not have come at a worse time in a week when the farming community is struggling to cope with the fallout from the BSE crisis in Europe," said Mr Tom Parlon, the president of the Irish Farmers' Association.
