Extradition to Britain is opposed

A Limerick man is opposing his extradition to Britain, where he is wanted for questioning in connection with the murder of another man in London, the High Court heard yesterday.

In proceedings under the European Arrest Warrant Act, Mr Kenneth Dundon (46), formerly of Hyde Road, Limerick city, and also with an address at Pearson Street, London, appeared before the High Court yesterday after being arrested some hours earlier outside Limerick District Court on foot of a European arrest warrant.

The warrant seeks Mr Dundon's extradition for questioning in connection with the murder of Mr Christopher Jacob (50), of Hoxton, London, who died on October 9th, 2003, after being stabbed in the face.

The president of the High Court, Mr Justice Finnegan, received and inspected the warrant, said he was satisfied as to Mr Dundon's identity and remanded him in custody to next Tuesday's High Court extradition list.

Mr Gregory Bowman, for Mr Dundon, said his client would not be consenting to his extradition and a bail application would be made. A State solicitor said bail would be opposed.

Earlier Sgt Michael Heffernan said he had approached Mr Dundon outside Limerick District Court yesterday and arrested him on foot of a European arrest warrant issued on January 29th last at Thames Magistrates Court. The High Court had endorsed the warrant on February 2nd last.

Sgt Heffernan said he had executed the warrant earlier yesterday when he approached Mr Dundon outside Limerick District Court. Mr Dundon was in the presence of his solicitor at the time. Sgt Heffernan asked the man was he Kenneth Martin Dundon.

The man had said he was. Sgt Heffernan said he served Mr Dundon with a copy of the warrant and of the European Arrest Warrant Act and arrested him.
