Army bomb disposal experts have made safe an explosive device in Co Limerick this afternoon.

The device was found in a roadside ditch at the Five Crosses Road in Rathkeale earlier today.

Gardaí had sealed off the area and evacuated local residents before calling in the bomb disposal team. The army team arrived at the scene at 12.10pm and carried out a controlled explosion. The scene was declared safe at 3pm.

The remains of the device are the hands of gardaí, who are investigating the matter.
