A planned civic reception for novelist Colm Tóibín in his native Enniscorthy on Saturday has been cancelled due to poor weather conditions.

The decision to cancel was taken before the thaw set in and organisers say they are trying to reschedule the event for a date in June.

Town clerk Padraig O’Gorman said the reception was planned to honour the Co Wexford town’s “most internationally acclaimed writer”.

Tóibín’s sixth novel, Brooklyn, which describes the experience of an Enniscorthy emigrant in 1950s New York, won the Costa prize for fiction earlier this month.
