Refuse charges are to rise by one third in south Dublin from next month, bringing the maximum annual cost of bin collection to €416.

South Dublin County Council said it is increasing its charge for emptying a large bin from €6 to €8 per tag, while the price of tags for small bins is increasing from €3 to €4.

The new charges are necessary because of increased disposal costs, the council said, however, it added that the charge does not cover the total costs and said its service is the second cheapest in the country, just behind Fingal County Council.

This is the first time south Dublin has increased the waste management charge since the introduction of pay-per-use in 2004.
