Gardaí have begun an investigation into what they believe was an attempt to establish a drug making factory in a town in Co Cork.

Gardaí uncovered a number of chemicals and mixing equipment when they raided an apartment in Youghal at around 10pm on Friday night.

The chemicals were made safe before being transferred to the State Laboratory for analysis.

A Garda spokesman said that the investigation was at a very early stage.

"Our priority was to make sure the chemicals were stable and safe and they have now been sent for analysis to the State Laboratory to establish their exact composition," he said

However the spokesman said they believe that what they uncovered in the apartment was an amphetamine making factory which was being still being set up when they raided the premises.
