Olympics:Cuba's boxing team, one of the most successful nation in Olympic history, have confirmed they intend to base themselves in Belfast as they prepare for this summer's London Games. The training camp will be based at Queen's University's Physical Education Centre.
The Cubans will be joining the Australian boxing team who have already confirmed they are going to Northern Ireland.
Wayne McCullough, who won a silver medal for Ireland in 1992, said it was a great achievement for his native city. “Having had a Cuban trainer guide me through my Olympic journey and having met one in the final, I know that the Cubans are traditionally known as the best boxers in the world, so it’s an amazing achievement to welcome the world’s best boxing team, the Cuban boxers, to train here,” he said.
“What a proud moment for Belfast boxers, boxing clubs and boxing fans that they’ve chosen our wee country as their base. With the unrivalled boxing tradition we have in Northern Ireland, plus outstanding facilities and coaches, it’s no surprise to me that they would be so eager to base themselves in Belfast.”
