Criminals were today believed to be behind the abduction and shooting of two men in Derry last night.

The victims, 31 and 56, were walking along the Culmore Road when a gang of masked men confronted them.

They were bundled into a car and driven to the Creggan housing estate where they were each shot in the leg in a park area. The car was later found on fire in Quarry Street.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland said today: "At this stage the motive is not believed to be paramilitary, but the incident is believed to be linked to a dispute between criminal elements."
