Two held after guns and bomb making material seized in Dublin

AK-47 among weapons found during searches of properties linked to dissident activity

Two men have been arrested after gardaí seized guns, ammunition and bomb making materials during a series of searches linked to dissident republican activity in Dublin.

A number of semi automatic pistols, a sawn-off shotgun and an AK-47 assault rifle were discovered during the searches which took place at properties in the Ballymun, East Wall and the Cloughran areas yesterday and today.

The Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal team was called in to deal with bomb making material found during the searches, which involved members of the Garda Special Detective Unit and Emergency Response Unit.

Gardaí said the seizures were “ very significant and a major setback against the criminal and subversive activities of dissident republicans”.

The three scenes have being examined by the Garda Technical Bureau.

This operation is the latest in a number of seizures and arrest’s against dissident republican’s this year.

Two men in their 50’s were arrested during this investigation and are being held at Mountjoy and Coolock Garda stations. They are being detained under the provisions of Section 30 of The Offences Against the State Act.
