A woman has been killed and a man seriously injured when the motorcycle they were travelling on crashed in Sligo on Sunday.

Gardaí say a woman in her 50s sustained fatal injuries when the motorcycle she was a passenger on collided with a car on the N16 Sligo to Manorhamilton Road at around 1pm.

She was later pronounced dead at the scene, and her body has since been removed to the mortuary of University Hospital Sligo.

The driver of the motorcycle, a male in his 50s, was also injured and he is said to be in a serious condition in hospital. The occupants of the other vehicle involved in the crash were unharmed.

Forensic investigators are carrying out technical examinations at the scene, and the N16 remains closed to traffic until further notice.
