A man in his late 40s was detained by gardaí in Dublin on Monday after a garda allegedly had a handgun pointed at him.

It is understood the incident occurred at about 3pm on Francis Street, in the Liberties, when a member of the Garda Traffic Corps stopped a van at a checkpoint and allegedly had the gun pointed in his direction.

A Garda spokesman said a man has been arrested in Dublin and was being held at Pearse Street Garda station under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.

He can be held for up to 72 hours without charge under the Act.
