Kildare councillor dies after alleged hit-and-run

Willie Crowley (65) died at Naas General Hospital after incident on Tuesday

A councillor, who was struck by a car in an alleged hit and run incident in Co Kildare earlier this week, has died.

Willie Crowley (65), an independent councillor for the Kildare-Newbridge municipal district, was left in a critical condition after being hit by a car at 8.40pm on Tuesday night on Eyre Street, Newbridge.

A 28-year-old man was subsequently arrested by gardaí and charged in connection with the incident. He was remanded in custody to appear before Athy District Court next Tuesday.

Mr Crowley was taken to Naas General Hospital where he was treated for his injuries.

Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to the collision and are asking anyone who may have been on the road around the time of the collision to contact Newbridge Garda Station on (045) 431212, the garda confidential line on 1800 666 111 or any other station.
