Elderly woman killed in Bantry collision named

Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to a fatal road traffic collision in which a 73-year-old female pedestrian was fatally injured when she was struck by a truck in West Cork over the weekend.

Anne Murphy from Seaview Terrace in Castletownbere, Co Cork was killed when she was hit by a truck on Wolfe Tone Square in the centre of Bantry just after midday on Saturday.

Ms Murphy, who was predeceased by her husband, Connie, was originally from Urhan on the Beara Peninsula but had lived for many years in Castletownbere where she had worked in the local creamery.

The driver of the truck was uninjured but was said to be deeply shocked by the incident which happened on the southern side of the square in the heart of the West Cork town.

Wolfe Tone Square was closed and diversions were put in place to allow a Garda forensic crash investigator examine the scene. The road re-opened around 7pm on Saturday.

Supt Brendan Fogarty of Bantry Garda station said there were a number of people shopping in the area at the time who may have witnessed the collision and several has already contacted gardaí.

However, gardaí said they were anxious to speak to anyone else who witnessed the collision and hasn’t contacted them to date to do so at Bantry Garda station on 027-20860, said Supt Fogarty.

Ms Murphy’s death brings to seven the number of people who have lost their lives in seven separate road traffic collisions on Cork roads since the start of the year.
