Athletics: Alistair Cragg's up-and-down season was given a massive shot in the arm over the weekend after he demolished Mark Carroll's Irish 10,000 metres record.

Cragg slashed seven seconds off the existing record, which had stood since May 2000, with a time of 27 minutes, 39.55 seconds at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational in Stanford University. Coincidentally, Carroll had also set his mark at the same venue.

Cragg, who conceded he was some way off his best during the European Indoors in Birmingham earlier this year, finished a confidence boosting fourth in the race as he continues his preparations for August's World Championships in Japan.
