Cork couple killed by car in Spanish resort

A husband and wife from Co Cork died after being struck by a car in the Spanish resort town of Santa Ponsa on Tuesday night.

A husband and wife from Co Cork died after being struck by a car in the Spanish resort town of Santa Ponsa on Tuesday night.

Mattie and Margaret O'Sullivan,  who ran a guest house in Bantry in west Cork, were on holiday in Mallorca when they were struck by a car in the resort town.

The woman was killed instantly while the man suffered serious injuries and was transferred to hospital where he died yesterday.

According to reports in the Spanish media, the driver of the car failed to stop after the collision.

An English woman was arrested by local police some hours following the incident after her badly damaged car, which matched the description given by eyewitnesses, was reported to the authorities.

Members of the couple's family are understood to have travelled to Mallorca and the Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed it is providing consular assistance.
