The National Youth Council of Ireland has said the increase in child benefit is a concrete step towards tackling child poverty. However, it said the Budget could have gone further in giving more tax breaks to the lower paid.

Those earning the minimum wage would still be liable for tax, said council president Mr James Doorly.
