Arson suspected in Bangor fires

Fires which damaged three stores in the centre of a Northern Ireland town were today being treated as arson.

Fires which damaged three stores in the centre of a Northern Ireland town were today being treated as arson.

TK Maxx, neighbouring toy shop Stewart Millar and JD Sports in Main Street in the seaside town of Bangor, Co Down were all smoke damaged by the early morning fires.

A Police Service spokesman said they were treating the fires, which started some time after midnight as malicious and experts were investigating how they were started.

One man was arrested and was later being questioned about the fires.

It is understood the blazes were not initially being linked to the campaign of incendiary bomb attacks mounted by dissident republicans opposed to the peace process and which has caused some £20 million sterling in damage in the past year.
