An Taisce’s Galway branch has described as “perilous” a business plan to provide a commercial seaplane service for tourists between Galway docks and the Aran Islands.

An Taisce has lodged an objection to the planning application for the venture, which seeks to install pontoons and associated berthing in Galway docks.

Harbourair Ireland Ltd aims to run from Foynes, Co Limerick, to Galway in its first phase, and plans to develop similar facilities in Lough Derg, where opposition has already been expressed to the project.

A spokesman for An Taisce said the proposed service would have environmental impacts on Galway bay, which has EU habitats and birds directive designations.
