Afghan soldiers killed two armed al-Qaeda prisoners who had barricaded themselves inside Kabul's Pul-i-Charki jail after overpowering and killing their guards today, a soldier said.

A police officer confirmed that the day-long siege inside the sprawling prison complex had ended with at least nine people dead.

Two other prisoners and at least five guards and police were killed earlier when a group of prisoners attempted to break out of the jail soon after dawn.

Three of the dead prisoners were believed to be Pakistanis and the fourth was an Iraqi.
