Anti-American protests over the reported desecration of the Koran at the US jail in Guantanamo Bay have spread to the Afghan capital of Kabul.
Students chanting slogans such as "Death to America!" and carrying banners saying "We condemn the desecration of Koran by the US soldiers" rallied early today in the centre of the capital.
Newsweekmagazine recently reported that investigators examining abuses at the US military prison in Guantanamo Bay had found interrogators "had placed Korans on toilets, and in at least one case flushed a holy book down the toilet".
Muslims consider the Koran the literal word of God and treat each book with deep reverence.
The protests in Kabul came after two days of rioting in the eastern city of Jalalabad, where four people were killed when police opened fire to control a crowd of thousands of people.
