The Irish Red Cross is expecting up to 500 applications for the Government Flood Relief Scheme after last month's severe flood damage.

Ms Carmel Dunne, the acting secretary general of the Irish Red Cross, reminded flood victims that the closing date for applications for humanitarian aid was next Friday, December 13th.

"Depending on the volume of applications received, it is hoped to have the aid distributed within six to eight weeks after the closing date," said Ms Dunne.

Applicants will need to prove hardship under one or more of the following headings:

death, serious injury, homelessness, damage to home or extreme hardship, according to the Red Cross.

Application forms and further details of the Irish Red Cross Flood Relief Scheme are available on the freephone number: 1800 92 34 24 or on www.redcross.ie.
