Maputo - The death toll in two days of protests by the Mozambican opposition party Renamo against a general election result last December has risen to 31, a government spokesman said yesterday. The Interior Ministry spokesman, Mr Nataniel Macamo, said that 31 people, including five policemen and one government official, had been confirmed dead and that 144 people had been wounded in the clashes in central and northern Mozambique. Mozambique Radio reported government officials saying that calm had been restored and that police had taken control of the protest areas.
