My scrappage scheme: 'I am delighted with the offer I got'

Dennis O’Sullivan from Tralee picked up his brand new Renault Grand Mégane last week at Adams of Tralee, and he told Motors that he hadn’t intended buying a new car at all.

“My car was a 1994, it had served me well, I had owned it for about seven years, and I knew it was time to upgrade. It was my little run-around car for home that did work and pulled a trailer, and when I went to upgrade I had about €10,000 in my pocket.

“I was attracted by the Renault advertisement. My local dealer sat me down and told me that for another €5,000 I could get in to a brand new car.”

O’Sullivan was amazed by how little the Mégane diesel would cost to run, with road tax of just €104, and there was no increase in his insurance. “I was going for a 2007 petrol and ended up with a 2010 diesel that does 60mpg and falls into emission Band A, and costs me €104 to tax, rather than €330 in the old car.

“I found the transaction very straightforward, and there were just a few conditions to meet with the scrappage, such as producing evidence that I had insurance on the old car, and an NCT.”

O’Sullivan says that he intends making the Mégane last a long time. “I have a fine car, and I am delighted with the offer I was given.”
