BMW's 318i SE has come out top in an assesssment of car security - with the Seat Arosa and Mitsubishi Space Star joint bottom, according to the British Consumers' Association.

The association's Which? magazine assessed the security of 77 models and marked them for resistance to theft from the vehicle, and resistance to theft of the vehicle, with all scores out of 10.

The BMW 318i SE got seven "theft from" and eight "theft of" points, giving it a combined top score. While getting six points for "theft of", the Seat Arosa got only one point for "theft from", with the Mitsubishi Space Star getting identical scores.

Of new models not tested before, the Jaguar X-type did best - getting six "theft from" and eight "theft of" points.

Which? said it was disappointed that the Mini, Hyundai Accent, Peugeot 307 and Renault Clio did not have alarms as standard. All the rest of the vehicles offered alarms.
