"Cullenagh", in evergreen, leafy splendour on one-third of an acre at the end of Stoney Road, Dundrum, Dublin 14 was built circa 1870 and given the name "Monte Vista". Name change apart, its elevated position and almost everything else that is individual and Victorian about it has stayed the same.

The vendors have tended to Cullenagh with care and appreciation over the 28 years of their ownership, making no structural changes and now selling a detached house which is very much a walk-in home. In its 318 sq m (3,427 sq ft) floor area there are six bedrooms (one now a dressingroom) and four reception rooms. The gardens, to the side and rear, are filled with botanical delights and fruit trees ready for harvesting. Sherry FitzGerald is quoting €2 million in advance of its auction on September 29th.

Victorian niceties and detail include picture rails and internal doors (with finger plates in some instances), Dado and picture rails, ceiling roses and cornicing, as well as sash windows which have been Ventrolla-upgraded. The service bells don't function any longer but remain in situ in the kitchen and other rooms.

Cullenagh's facade is in the dun-coloured Dolphin's Barn brick peculiar to its period. The façade finish and entrance steps are of granite.

The ornate fireplace in the front, family room is particularly interesting with a diabolical head with horns into the oak mantel whose significance a new owner might like to uncover. The arched inset is of cast-iron. In common with fireplaces elsewhere in the house, this one is gas-fired.There is a recessed arch, long window to the front and picture rail.

The hallway has embossed and painted wallpaper and a Dado rail. The entrance door has the original, heavy locking system and the decorative tiling in the porch follows through to the hallway and on to a set of granite steps leading to the kitchen and rear of the house.

The ceilings in the interconnecting drawing and dining rooms are almost 11ft high and the folding doors between are concertina-style. There is a deep bay window to the front, a smaller one to the side, and on the walls a dull gold wallpaper which lends to the sense of period. The fireplace here is not original but has an elaborate overmantel in mahogany as well as inset tiles showing pictures of a harvest scene. There is a small bay window in this room also.

An old fashioned-style kitchen to the rear has Hacker cream-painted units and a Viking, professional standard cooker set into the original, tiled chimney breast. The walls are wood panelled and there is a window over the garden.

A cluster of small rooms off the rear inner lobby serve as guest toilet and a utility room which, when the vendors moved in almost 30 years ago, still had a single iron bed and served as a maid's room.

A window over the return throws light onto the stairs. On the return there is the family bathroom, white tiled with blue, which has been made state-of-the-art with corner bath and separate shower. Also on the return there is an en suite bedroom with fireplace and steps to a separate dressingroom with a bank of wardrobes.

Off the first floor landing there are four other bedrooms. Two of these, to the front, have mountain views and in one there is a white, dappled marble fireplace. The second has a unique and interesting fireplace of carved mahogany with overmantel and inset mirrors.

A third, smaller bedroom is to the front and the fifth bedroom, which has a bank of fitted wardrobes, has an original cast-iron fireplace.

A grotto in the rear garden may have been built to cover a well. A lawned side garden has high laurel hedging and a great many shrubs and plants. To the other side of the house a paved pathway is lined with hostas. There is a raised decking area, painted black as are a couple of Barna sheds with barbecue area laid in front. There are four apple trees and a plum tree, and a line of sheds in Dolphin Barn brick.

High hedging maintains privacy to the front where there is a great Monkey puzzle tree and parking for several cars.
