A concept called McCarthy

Pat McCarthy started out as a fashion designer who became best known for menswear

Pat McCarthy started out as a fashion designer who became best known for menswear. But since relocating from Dublin to Kilkenny five years ago, his business has broadened to include interiors and textiles.

The latest McCarthy output in this area is a new collection of ceramics, which will be launched in Kilkenny stores this month. Fashion is still important - he produces knitwear for Liberty in London and works with Magee - but due to investment in a studio in Thomastown and the employment of a strong design team, Pat McCarthy's business has become as much about developing new concepts and translating trends for clients in retail, craft and manufacturing sectors as creating his own products.

Part of what this means is that he can deliver a whole package around a product, down to the graphics and presentation. A background in marketing helps to attract clients such as an American chain which wants McCarthy to come up with a series of products including glass and gift pieces.

The products in his new Kilkenny ceramics line - vases and tableware - reflect the studio's international feel. They're just back from Paris and the Maison Object interiors show and fashion's Premier Vision fabric trade show. The vessels pictured on the right are coated in a reactive glaze; others have a denim blue colour. It's all very desirable stuff and very much worth a look. At Kilkenny stores countrywide.
