Co Cork/€1 million: Islands have always been the preserve of the rich and famous - think Charlie Haughey and Richard Branson - so there is sure to be interest in Sandy Cove Island off Kinsale, in west Cork.

The 18-acre island, which has been owned by Dublin businessman Brendan Coyle since the late 1980s, is on the market by tender through Keane Mahony Smith.

Bids in the region of €1 million are expected by July 31st.

There is no house on the island, but it does have its own beach and cave you can sail into, complete with blow hole.

Within easy sailing distance of Kinsale harbour, the island rises to a gentle slope at its centre, with south-facing views out to sea.

Sandy Cove Island was previously owned by the Gilman family for many generations, and it features in the writings of Don Juan de Aquila, who headed the Spanish army sent to the aid of the Irish in 1601.
