Bord Bia Awards: Innovation category

The Bord Bia Food and Drink Awards are designed to recognise and reward excellence in the Irish food and drinks industry. The finalists in the innovation category: Future Nutrition; Paganini; and Irish Distillers, are profiled here

FUTURE NUTRITION

Background
Future Nutrition is the manufacturer of functional beverages and powders for the sports nutrition, health and lifestyle markets.

The company was founded with a strong focus on innovation as the driver of its business. As both a powder blender and a drinks bottler, Future Nutrition is able to address the needs of the nutrition industry in both packaging forms, and offers a wide variety of product, process and packaging to contract clients worldwide.

Innovation
With the input of the company's scientists, nutritionists and beverage application experts, the DermaGlo skin health drink was created to help replace the skin's collagen lost during the ageing process. DermaGlo can be taken daily to increase the skin's vitality without injections or prescriptions and offers a variety of natural and nutritional benefits from energy metabolism to skin, hair and nail health. It is targeted mainly at women over the age of 25.

IRISH DISTILLERS

Background
Irish Distillers was formed in 1966 following the merger of three of the great Irish whiskey distillers, namely John Jameson & Sons, Powers & Sons, and the Cork Distillery. To survive and prosper, the company decided there was nothing for it but to close its existing distilleries in Cork and Dublin and consolidate production in a new, purpose-built facility in Midleton, Cork.

In 1988, the company joined French drinks conglomerate Pernod Ricard.

Innovation
Yellow Spot is a 12-year-old single pot still whiskey that has been matured in a unique combination of Bourbon casks, Sherry casks and Malaga casks. It was re-launched in 2012, having been originally produced, bottled and sold by Dublin-based wine merchants, Mitchell & Son.

The re-launch underpinned Irish Distillers' pledge to introduce two new single pot still Irish whiskey expressions each year for the next 10 years, as part of its commitment to grow the category through innovation.

PAGANINI

Background
Paganini is a family-owned manufacturer of dairy ice cream and desserts, such as FitFuel, supplying the Irish food service market and exporting to the UK and the Middle East. The company was founded in 1990 by dairy farmer Tomás Murphy, who began making ice cream using a classic Italian recipe from his farm in Wexford. He wanted his fresh milk to be enjoyed by many and what better way than to make rich dairy ice-cream, so Paganini was born.

Innovation
FitFuel's functional products help individuals maximise the effect of exercise by providing the necessary protein to enable muscle growth.
