We feature two Italian wines from Dunnes Stores this week. Both come from the Abruzzo region on the eastern side of central Italy and are made from local grape varieties. Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is a familiar name; you can expect to find it on most Italian restaurant lists and every retail wine shop. The pecorino grape is less well-known. In fact, it almost disappeared at one stage in the mid-20th century. Now, it is valued for its refreshing acidity and rich fruit.

Vibrant grapefruit zest on the nose, rich tropical fruit on the palate with a rounded finish. This would make a nice aperitif, or you could serve it with lightly spicy Asian prawn or chicken dishes.
Tenuta Ulisse Montepulciano d’Abruzzo

Big, rich and ripe with rounded sweet cassis and dark cherry fruits layered with coffee and a smooth finish. Try it with barbecued or grilled red meat.
