Gillian Lawler's paintings were inspired by Centralia in Pennsylvania, a town overwhelmed by environmental disaster triggered by the ignition of a massive underlying seam of coal. Poisonous fumes, sink holes and more. Lawler read of the town in Bill Bryson's A Walk in the Woods, and travelled to see the site for herself.
