Robert Earl Keen is one of Lone Star State's best-kept secrets. A highly literate songwriter and a strong and captivating alt.country performer, he has nonetheless never managed to extend his local popularity into more broadly national recognition. Lyle Lovett and Joe Ely have sung his songs, but judging by this show (recorded for the American TV programme Austin City Limits in 2001) he knows best how to squeeze the most out of them. Supported by an excellent band capable of swinging and rocking Texas style, Keen sounds like a man at the top of his form, relating these graphic tales of the marginalised with the required gusto and sensitivity. You may know his gently caustic The Road Goes on Forever, but the other 16 tracks pack a big punch as well. This CD is also available as a DVD. www.livefromaustintx.com
