This Bristol band has gamely battled with the flack over naming themselves after a character in the movie Scott Pilgrim vs the World. There's little or no connection between their music and a movie based on a graphic novel that boasts left-of-centre pop cultural sensibilities. So far, so odd. But something else jars: the band's slavish, often queasy adherence to a kind of pomp and circumstance that you thought had disappeared with The Bravery or Mansun. Try as they might to hide such an approach with (in fairness) skilfully arranged songs such as Brighter, Modern World and Friend of the Madness, underneath it all there is a far-too-knowing "puzzle" aptitude that knows exactly which piece goes where. Crossover success beckons, but be cautious with this bunch – they're just too slick for comfort. distillermusic.com Download: Brighter, Modern World
