Scott McLaughlin's six pieces recorded here "represent a snapshot of my thinking at the start of what I hope to be a long and fruitful exploration of relationships between materiality and performativity in sound". The style is that of the slowly morphing drone, solo wind instruments employing multiphonics, and ensemble works concentrating on resonances that wax and wane, with the tuning often shifting slowly enough for the beating of the combination tones to loom large. It's as though McLaughlin's primary goal is to emulate a kind of sonic microscope and take the listener as far as possible into the texture of the sound, dwelling long on effects that would normally pass by in a flash. ergodos.ie
