Newfound Sounds for September

Stevie Grainger is well known as a Cork DJ and fountain of music knowledge – and the culmination of years steeped in wax is his new double A-sided single, Deep Down South/Not All About That, which features the soulful tones of Christiana Underwood. It's out on his own Soul Jamz label.

Clare native Meadhbh Boyd is based in the UK now, and her latest release sees her draw from jazz, trad, classical minimalism and pop. It features off-beat piano playing and quirky vocals.

Naoise Roo's deep and powerful vocals are stunning, and album Lilith (out on October 24th) is a dark and multi-layered listen. Fans of 1990s rock bands like Throwing Muses will enjoy this.

The Casanova Wave doesn't want to be pigeon-holed as electro-pop, so his new tracks (which feature collaborations with Biggles Flys Again and In The Willows) see him aiming for a more live sound. He hasn't totally shed the electronic feel, but it's a fresh take on what he does best. The new EP is out on September 12th.

Berlin-by-way-of-Cork-and-Waterford duo Youre Only Massive have a new Midi Grrrl EP, which also mines electronic quarries. But they also bring a sparky feminist energy to proceedings.

For a completely different take on Irish music, look to Amanda Feery, whose Spells from the Ice Age tape is out on Fort Evil Fruit records. It's entirely improvised piano-based music that was the result of "blind intuition", and sounds bloody gorgeous.
