Mozart Requiem Realisations

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Elin Manahan Thomas, Christine Rice, James Gilchrist, Christopher Purves, Stephen Cleobury, Academy of Ancient Music

What’s this? A Mozart Requiem that spreads over two discs? Yes. But there are significant extras, such as a range of movements heard in completions by Richard Maunder, Robert Levin, Franz Beyer, Duncan Druce and Michael Finnissy rather than those of the standard version by Mozart’s pupil, Süssmayr. And, on a separate disc, there’s a 66-minute audio documentary, scripted by Mozart scholar Cliff Eisen, which traces the genesis and reception of the work, and helps to put the various non-Süssmayer completions in context. The actual performance under Stephen Cleobury, with solo and choral voices clear and piercing, and the period instruments of the Academy of Ancient Music, is well worth investigating.
