With so many piano, bass and drums teams knocking on the door these days, the piano trio "event horizon" cannot be far off. But every once in a while, a threesome comes along that finds a way past the gatekeepers of the past. Swiss pianist Marc Perrenoud, bassist Marco Müller and drummer Cyril Ragamey have been playing together for seven years, and in the manner of contemporary European groups, they have developed their own "band sound", a big-hearted, harmonically open music laid down over grooves from jazz and funk. Sure, there are echoes here of EST, and perhaps of Americans such as Robert Glasper and, more distantly, Brad Mehldau, but here is a trio that may also be capable of making their own statement on the most crowded stage known to jazz. marcperrenoud.com
