Samsung unveils new foldable phones

Company claims new handsets are more durable than predecessors

Samsung has unveiled its new foldable phones, claiming the third generation of its Z Fold and the Z Flip handsets claiming are more durable and powerful than before.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 is aimed at those who prioritise multitasking and productivity, with the device folding out into a 7.6-inch display. The use of an under-display camera removes the punch hole to accommodate the front-facing camera, giving users a full canvas for their apps.

The Eco display technology is almost 30 per cent brighter than its predecessor, with the 120Hz adaptive refresh rate available on the main and cover screen for smoother scrolling, while upgraded stereo speakers support Dolby Atmos.

It also comes with Samsung’s S Pen for note taking and productivity.

For those who want something more compact, the Galaxy Z Flip3 comes with enhanced camera features, and a larger cover screen for quick use.

It comes with a larger cover screen that is four times larger than its predecessor, with the same 120Hz adaptive refresh rate as the Fold 3. Samsung has also brought in new "flex" experiences for the foldable screens, bringing in apps from Microsoft and Google.

Both phones are are rated IPX8 for water resistance, meaning they will withstand submersion in up to 1.5m of freshwater for up to 30 minutes.

Cases

The case for both phones is made from tougher Armour Aluminium, with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus to protect displays against scratches and accidental drops. Both phones also have a new protective film made from a stretchable PET, making the main screen more durable. The devices are also tested to fold more than 200,000 times.

"With the launch of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 and Flip3, we are evolving our Galaxy Z Series portfolio with two devices built for the varying demands of today's fast-paced world."

Both foldable phones have got a price cut too. The new phones will go on sale from August 27th, starting at €1,899 for the Fold 3, and €1,099 for the Flip 3.

Samsung also announced new ear buds, the Galaxy Buds2, its smallest and lightest ear buds yet, and the Samsung Watch 4.
