The iPhone 5s and 5c will be available to buy in Ireland on October 25th, Apple has confirmed.

The two latest smartphones from Apple will go on sale in more than 25 countries including Ireland on the day, followed by a dozen more the following week.

The new models have been available since last month in 11 countries including the US, UK and China, with a record 9 million sold in the first weekend alone.

The iPhone 5s is thinner and lighter than previous designs, with a 64-bit chip, an 8 megapixel camera and fingerprint identification technology, Touch ID. Recommended retail prices range from €699 for the 16GB model to €899 for 64GB.

Apple shares rose 5 per cent on the back of the strong sales figures last month.

It was the first time Apple offered a new model iPhone for sale in China, now the world’s largest mobile-phone market, at the same time as the US
