Planning a new kitchen is exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming. There are layouts to consider, finishes to compare and decisions to make about everything from flooring, cupboard doors and handles to tiles and splashbacks.
With so much attention naturally given to how the room will look, it is easy to spend less time considering the appliances at its heart. Yet these are the elements you will rely on every day, long after the worktops have been fitted and the final paint colour chosen.
Ben Murphy, country manager Ireland and director with Miele, shares his advice on choosing appliances that will work intuitively, efficiently and beautifully for years to come: “The best starting point is not a list of appliance features, but to think carefully about how you live and use your kitchen. Do you cook from scratch, batch-cook or entertain regularly? Do you rely heavily on your oven or tend to prepare quicker meals on the hob? Is the dishwasher constantly running? Do you buy plenty of fresh food, or need generous freezer storage?”
Once you understand how you use your kitchen, it becomes easier to identify the features that will make a genuine difference. Miele develops appliances across cooking, refrigeration, dishwashing and laundry, with technology designed to make everyday life easier, more intuitive and more efficient.

Your oven and hob are likely to be among the most-used appliances in the kitchen, so consider what you regularly cook rather than what you imagine making on special occasions.
Selected Miele ovens include automatic programmes to make everyday cooking simpler, alongside more distinctive features such as TasteControl, which prevents food from continuing to cook once a programme has finished. For keen bakers and cooks, Moisture Plus adds moisture during baking and roasting, helping to produce light dough, browned crusts and succulent roasts.
Think about positioning too. Installing an oven at a higher, more comfortable height makes it easier to check and remove food. A Miele Gourmet drawer can preheat crockery, keep dishes ready to serve and be used for low-temperature cooking.
Induction hobs provide fast, responsive heat and transfer energy directly to the pan, giving you precise control while minimising wasted energy. A Miele TwoInOne induction hob with integrated vapour extraction removes the need for a conventional hood overhead, helping to create a clearer view across the room – ideal for an island.
Shopping habits should also inform your choice of refrigeration. A household buying plenty of fruit, vegetables, meat and fish will have different requirements from one that relies more heavily on frozen or pre-prepared food.
Selected Miele refrigeration appliances include PerfectFresh Pro compartments, designed to provide suitable temperature and humidity conditions to keep food fresher for longer. Clear, well-organised storage also makes it easier to see what you have, helping to prevent food from being forgotten and wasted.
‘The most useful technology is not necessarily the most conspicuous. It should remove effort from the things you do regularly’
— Ben Murphy, country manager Ireland and director with Miele
Refrigerators operate continuously, so compare the energy label, annual energy consumption and usable capacity rather than looking at the rating alone. Choose a size that works for your household.
The dishwasher can be an afterthought, but it is often one of the hardest-working appliances in a busy kitchen. Look for flexible baskets that can accommodate everyday crockery alongside pans, delicate glasses and larger serving dishes. Noise levels matter in an open-plan space, particularly if the machine will run while the family is eating, working or relaxing nearby.
Selected Miele dishwashers offer AutoDos, which automatically dispenses detergent from the integrated PowerDisk. QuickPowerWash delivers cleaning results for normally soiled crockery in just 58 minutes, while AutoOpen drying opens the dishwasher door automatically at the end of the programme.
For everyday use, look for a dishwasher with an Eco programme. It may take longer, but it is designed to reduce energy and water consumption. Waiting until the dishwasher is full before running it will also help you use resources more efficiently.
A home improvement project can be a useful opportunity to reconsider the utility room too. When choosing a washing machine, look for a capacity that reflects the loads you regularly wash. On selected Miele models, TwinDos automatically dispenses detergent, while the honeycomb drum is designed to care for fabrics as they move through the wash, helping them to last longer.
When choosing a tumble dryer, heat-pump technology offers an energy-efficient alternative to conventional condenser drying. Miele heat-pump dryers provide economical, gentle drying.
“The most useful technology is not necessarily the most conspicuous,” says Murphy. “It should remove effort from the things you do regularly, whether that means helping you select a cooking programme, dispensing detergent automatically or providing a useful notification through an app.”

Energy considerations should extend beyond the letter on the label. Compare appliances of a similar size and type, check their stated annual or per-cycle consumption and consider whether the capacity is appropriate for your household. Using Eco programmes, running full loads and avoiding unnecessarily high washing temperatures can all reduce energy and water consumption over time.

Miele Ireland also offers cooking events and product demonstrations, providing an opportunity to see how different features could work in your own home.
“Major appliances are a significant investment, so it is important to look beyond their initial appearance and purchase price,” says Murphy. “Consider energy and water consumption, the care provided for food, cookware and clothing, and whether the appliance has been designed for lasting use.”
Miele tests its household appliances for up to 20 years’ use. During product development, appliances undergo rigorous durability tests designed to simulate average household use over that period.
Design matters too, especially when several appliances are grouped together. Miele’s built-in range is designed to sit neatly within kitchen cabinetry, while co-ordinated design lines, including PureLine, VitroLine and handleless ArtLine, offer different visual treatments. With finishes such as Stainless steel, Obsidian black, Graphite grey and Pearl beige available on selected models, the collection can complement kitchens ranging from traditional and transitional to ultra-contemporary.
