Sir, – While Dr Rory Hearne and Phil Murphy’s opinion piece on the establishment of a “State-owned sustainable building agency” has some elements of merit, it would be an extremely complex organisation to set up (“We’ve talked enough about the housing crisis. Here’s a radical plan”, Opinion & Analysis, June 14th).
Its comparison to the now defunct National Building Agency (NBA), as suggested by letter writers (June 16th), is not sustainable. The NBA produced some fine developments in its time but it provided a service similar to the main city and county authorities of planning, design and the procurement of private contracting firms to build out their developments.
It did not have a construction arm for its service. – Yours, etc,
