TWO YOUNG men have been arrested and remain in Garda custody following an armed stand-off in which gardaí were threatened with a handgun after they were called to a house in Cork city.
Gardaí received a call to attend a premises on John Redmond Street on the north side of Cork city shortly after 11pm on Saturday.
They were confronted by two men, one of whom was armed with a handgun. The pair had been involved in an argument prior to the arrival of the gardaí.
Gardaí requested back-up and the Armed Regional Support Unit was called in. Three other people were in the premises at the time but there were no injuries arising out of the dispute.
It is understood the incident was brought under control with relative ease. The background to the argument between the two men is unknown and investigations are continuing.
Just after midnight yesterday a youth in his late teens and a man in his late twenties were arrested at the scene. They were taken to Mayfield Garda station on the north side of the city under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.
The pair can be detained for up to three days. The scene of the incident has been preserved pending a Garda examination.
