AUSTIN - Rescue workers yesterday picked through the splintered remains of a rural neighbourhood searching for victims of a powerful tornado which killed at least 27 people and left dozens homeless.

The death toll was expected to rise, with another 23 people reported missing in Jarrell, Texas, police said. At least six tornadoes ripped through the heart of Texas during spring storms on Tuesday.
