An earthquake measuring a magnitude of six on the Richter scale hit Greece's eastern Aegean islands this morning, but no injuries or serious damage were reported.

The earthquake also shook a region of western Turkey, including Izmir, the country's third largest city, but again there were no immediate reports of injury or damage, Turkey's state news agency Anatolian said.

The earthquake's epicentre was located near the Turkish coastline, about 250 kilometres east of Athens and jolted the Greek islands of Samos, Ikaria and Chios.
