A 20-YEAR-OLD man is fighting for his life after suffering serious head injuries during an altercation in Galway city centre at the weekend.
The man, from Waterford but who had not been named yesterday, suffered the injuries early on Saturday morning in Eyre Square.
Gardaí, who issued a description of two men following the incident at about 3.15am, subsequently arrested two local men.
A Garda spokesman confirmed yesterday the two had been released and a file was to be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
Gardaí are examining CCTV footage in the area to establish what happened in Eyre Square which led to the serious injuries.
Gardaí believe the injured man and a friend were on top of a 10ft ESB shelter when two other men, both believed to be about 20, came along. An altercation ensued, resulting in the Waterford man sustaining serious head injuries after falling, or having been pushed, to the ground.
He was taken to University College Hospital where his condition yesterday in the intensive care unit was described as “serious, but stable”.
His parents travelled from Waterford and were last evening maintaining a bedside vigil at the hospital.
Gardaí sealed off the area for a full technical examination.
