National Photography Collection

A selection from the National Photography Collection on display at Gallery of Photography Ireland from 19 January - 26 March 2022. The National Photography Collection has been established to celebrate the work of artists across the span of their careers. Rather than collecting iconic images or key ‘pieces’ the aim is to build the Collection as an archival repository that reflects individual practices across the span of artists careers. It will be made available to curators, researchers and the wider public through exhibitions, seminars, and publications, creating an essential educational and historical resource for the future understanding of artists practices in Ireland.

Dara McGrath, Site-099 Beaumont Quarry, Douglas, Cork City.
Civilian Joseph Cotter

Cotter?s body was discovered on 15 October 1920 in a disused quarry in the eastern suburbs of Cork city between the Ballinlough and Boreenmanna Roads; he had been missing for two days. He had several wounds on his face, head, and neck. After the onset of curfew on 13 October, a soldier had fired a shot at residents, and Cotter may have run to the vicinity of the quarry to avoid curfew patrols. On balance the evidence points to death by misadventure.
